Story has it, there was a gravel cycling legend named McVanderSlice who loved to explore the wild and rugged terrain of the Oregon Coast Range. They were known for their fearless riding style, endurance, and unforgiving sense of adventure. McVanderSlice would often ride for days on end, camping in the woods, and finding new trails and roads to challenge themselves. One of their most famous exploits was when they rode the entire length of the Oregon Coast Range, from Astoria to Brookings, in just 10 days. They covered over 800 miles and climbed more than 100,000 feet of elevation, facing rain, mud, snow, wind, and wildlife along the way. They traversed paved roads, gravel roads, dirt roads, logging roads, fire roads, and even some singletrack trails. Everything was carried on their 90's GT Avalanche. McVanderSlice was not only a legend for their riding achievements, but also for their generosity and kindness, often stopping to help other cyclists who had mechanical problems or needed directions. A hero's hero.
The McVanderSlice offers a "choose your own slice" approach with three route options.
The Full Slice offers an overall golden ratio of 1K ft of climbing for every 10 miles of riding. Grind up classic climbs on Peavine, White, and Von Roads, and pick your lines on paved descents of Meadowlake and Willis Roads. It's bound to be epic!
42 Miles, 4200ft of climbing, 4-4.5 hours estimated
The Medium Slice packs a similar punch, cutting out the Meadowlake descent and Von Road climb, and bringing riders back to Mac via Baker Creek Road instead of High Heaven Road.
32 miles, 2600ft of climbing, 3-3.5hours estimated
The Small Slice offers an introductory option for those that want to get out, but not WAY OUT. It's smart to stay within your limits.
20miles, 1200ft of climbing, 2-2.5 hours estimated
Tire width recommendation: Small Slice - no smaller than 32cMedium and Full Slice - no smaller than 40c
